Who Are We??

Hi there!

I’m Natalie – wife to Chris and mum to Olivia and Dominic.

I was born in Zimbabwe and lived there until I was 21 years old. I then briefly lived in Perth, Australia, before moving to the UK with my now husband. We have lived in Dorking, Surrey since 2014 and absolutely love it here!!

I have a Masters degree in Forensic Psychology and Crime and I volunteer for the Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey (providing support to detainees in police custody) and Circles South East (supporting sex offenders after their release from prison). I also work part time in Insolvency and I love baking and cooking as a release from my generally sedentary job.

I spend most of my “spare” time running around after my two kids (and husband!), but I try to keep fit and healthy with a bit of running and gym-ing – which is much needed with all the cake scraps that get eaten! I also love to paint, but I don’t get too much time to do that these days.

I am a self taught baker (thank you YouTube!) and I love the creative side of cake making. I initially only made cakes for my kids’ birthdays and then subsequently started doing cakes for family and friends as well. I eventually started “Cakes by Natalie”, after encouragement from family and friends, in 2019 (more about all that another time) and I absolutely LOVE creating beautiful cakes to help people celebrate a special occasion. I really enjoy researching new ideas (there are so many other amazing cake makers out there!!) and the challenge of making something exciting and different!!. There is nothing better than the thrill that I get when a cake turns out how I planned it in my head and I have happy customers!!

So that’s it about me really. I hope to hear from you soon for all your cake making requirements.

Oh yes – I’m also on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter too, so please do give me a like / follow / share / retweet!!

Much love

Nat xx

Birthday Celebrations – Covid Style!

Well we all know this year hasn’t gone according to plan and my daughter’s 6th birthday celebrations were no different! For over a year I had promised her an amazing party for her birthday with some of her school besties. As some of you may know, I love to try and create a fab party for the kids; I do homemade themed decorations, food, cakes, party bags, the works!! I had planned the entire thing in my head; it would be a Halloween themed party with crafts, biscuit decorating, an amazing grazing platter and of course, a super spooky cake!! However, as with many things, Covid-19 put a spanner in the works!! So, it was onto plan B….

In the end we (and by we I mean me!) decided to have a fun family picnic and sleepover party. We hired the amazing Sleepylily – sleepover tents & parties, who provided an incredible 4m bell tent in the garden, which was decorated beautifully and was super snug for a mid-October night…

We also included the luxe picnic package and had a yummy picnic dinner inside before moving out to the tent. The set up was superb and the attention to detail was great!

In typical 2020 style we had a Zoom “Happy Birthday” sing song with some of her school friends (who got to enjoy some pre-delivered cupcakes) to help make it a bit more party like and we enjoyed a yummy piece of birthday chocolate cake, which was super bright and fun:

We then enjoyed a film in the tent, along with popcorn, sweeties and a nice warm mug of hot chocolate, before spending a fairly chilly night in the tent!!

All in all, it was a different, but really fun birthday!! Olivia was so excited and had a great time – and that’s all that counts really!! Hopefully next year plans will be slightly more normal again, but in the meantime we make the best of what we’ve got and spending time with family really can’t be beaten!

Happy birthday beautiful girl – love you to the moon and back!!
